Project Summary
Fabripod made its debut in digital design with the Urchin Lamp, a product designed using parametric techniques similar to the Aortic Arc project at California College of the Arts.
The Urchin lamps were laser cut from thin (2 veneer) birch plywood or PLA plastic and were available either pre-assembled or as a kit, meant to be built by hand at home.
The assembly was not easy but many brave people opted for this approach.
Approach
The benefit of a parametric component based design was that the same code could be applied to a variety of shapes.
The lamps came in 2 sizes and 3 shapes: tall round and flat. We even briefly had an online configuration tool which allowed users to create a lamp of any shape and size (within structural limits) and change the parameters of cone height and opening.
